- The thermostat on the BMW S54 engine, found in the E46 M3, E36 Z3, and E85 Z4 models, helps to regulate engine temperature by allowing hot engine coolant to leave the engine and be cooled in the radiator. When the engine is cold, a thermostatic valve inside the thermostat remains closed, keeping coolant circulating within the engine as the engine warms up to its optimum operating temperature. When the engine heats above its optimum operating temperature, the thermostatic valve opens allowing the hot engine coolant to circulate through the radiator and be cooled before returning to the engine thus brining the engine temperature back to it optimum operating temperature. When the thermostatic valve fails, the valve can either stick closed causing the engine to overheat or remain open causing the engine to run too cool. If either of these failures happen, the thermostat must be replaced. The 80-degree Celsius thermostat 462180D from Wahler is an original equipment replacement thermostat and the thermostat preferred by the BMW technicians at your local BMW service center. Wahler is the automotive thermal management division of Borge Warner.
