Mufflers are acoustic devices in the exhaust system of your Porsche and are designed to quiet the sound of exhaust gases rapidly exiting the engine. They are often large tubes made of metal with a series of passage lines with fiberglass or resonating chambers designed to absorb or disrupt sound waves.
Mufflers are highly susceptible to rust from water and salt found on roads and water inside your vehicle’s exhaust created as a byproduct of engine combustion. Over time the rust can eat away at the muffler and its internal chambers, causing it to emit loud exhaust noises and rattle when driving.
Replacing the Muffler on Your Porsche
Replacing the muffler on your Porsche will involve accessing the complete underside of the vehicle. While some mufflers attach to the rear exhaust pipe, others are large exhaust pipe and muffler assemblies and can be pretty cumbersome. Most mufflers are bolted to the exhaust system, however because of the rust they collect, the flanges and slip fitting that connect the muffler to the rest of the exhaust system are often also rusted and require penetrating oil and force to loosen the bolts and connections.
When replacing your muffler, it is always recommended to use new clamps and gaskets to ensure the muffler is adequately sealed to the rest of the exhaust system. Also, replacing the hangers that hold the muffler in place and allowing the muffler to sway on rough roads will ensure your new muffler will stay in place and not break away from below your Porsche.
