It holds excess coolant until needed by the engine’s cooling system, it allows for expansion and contraction of the coolant as the coolant it heats and cools, and it is part of the control system that regulates the overall pressure within the cooling system and the boiling point of the coolant.
- If the coolant reservoir develops a leak, it will not pressurize and lower the boiling point of the coolant in the cooling system. When this happens, excess pressure inside the cooling system will force coolant out replacing it with air and the engine to eventually overheat.
